"The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning."

Getting Words Right
Have you ever wished for someone to
I created Lightning Bolt Writing to be that wished-for writer. My goal is to help smart, productive people communicate more effectively in writing.
In the 25 years before starting Lightning Bolt Writing, I wrote or edited over half a million written pages that
In those years I realized two things: (1) it's infeasible to write large amounts of excellent content while also running a business / leading an organization / catering to multiple constituencies, and (2) I truly love writing well. Producing precise, tactical writing that leads to action makes me happy.
I am Karen Worthington, writer, editor, child advocate, lawyer, mother, wife, environmentalist, entrepreneur and business owner. Lightning Bolt Writing combines my love of writing, passion for effective communication and fascination with technology. It's a perfect job--I meet scintillating people, satisfy my curiosity about intriguing subjects, get paid to obsess about every word I write, and indulge my desire to promulgate perfect grammar and punctuation.
My words have told the stories of technology experts, entrepreneurs, businesses, lawyers, doctors, children in foster care and juvenile jails, private foundations, nonprofit agencies and philanthropists. Contact me and let me help tell your story.

Words Delight Me
I believe that written communication is an essential art. As a child, I loved diagramming sentences, playing word games and writing (I still do!). In high school I served as editor-in-chief of my school newspaper and wrote award-winning essays.
At Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, I chose my major based on what I most enjoyed doing. I earned a BA with honors in creative writing and a minor in literature and I spent two years as editor-in-chief of the Triton Tribune. I then earned a JD from Emory University Law School and spent 19 years using my writing skills to improve the lives of disadvantaged children as a policy analyst, educator, author, child law and policy center director, nonprofit leader, legislative advocate and children's law expert.
When I am not writing or advocating for children, I might be found walking on the beach, playing Scrabble, being outraged by inflammatory editorials, reading blogs about efficient work practices (what we used to call time management) or hanging out with family and friends.
